MARKET PULSE OCT 26:ANALYSTS DOWNGRADE 12, UPGRADE 6 AS HOLD TAKES OVER

The Nigerian equity market enters the last week of October 2026 not with conviction, but with caution. Capital Market Operators issued 18 rating revisions this week – 12 downgrades against only 6 upgrades – and the destination rating was almost universally Hold. Last week was balanced, 5 upgrades and 5 downgrades. This week, analysts are telling investors to sit on their hands.
That shift matters. Hold as the most common rating after revision means analysts see little margin of safety either way. Projected returns are small, risks are elevated, and the market is becoming stock-specific, not sector-driven.
The Movers and Shakers: Where Analysts Still See Upside
In a cautious week, four names stand out as the real movers.
INTBREW is the most contested but highest upside call. ARM Research upgraded it from Hold to Accumulate with a projected upside of 15.47% – the highest among this week’s revisions. PAC Research on the same stock cut it from Buy to Hold with negative 7.18%. The split tells you consumer goods recovery is uneven, but ARM is betting on volume recovery and pricing power.
MBENEFIT in insurance is the quiet shaker. Lead Capital raised it from Hold to Buy with 12.67% upside. In a week where its peer INTENEGINS was cut from Strong Buy to Hold with negative 5.88%, MBENEFIT is the only insurance stock with fresh Buy momentum.
Banking’s Two Survivors: FIRSTHOLDCO and WEMABANK. Lead Capital upgraded both from Hold to Buy with projected upsides of 11.03% and 11.67% respectively. In a sector where ETI and FIDELITYBK were downgraded to Hold, and ZENITHBANK only managed a move from Reduce to Hold with 1.3% return, FirstHoldCo and Wema are being priced as value rebound plays ahead of dividend season.
ZENITHBANK itself is a shaker by event, not by return. Afrinvest lifted it from Reduce to Hold ahead of its dividend corporate action on 30 October. All three dividend stocks this week – ZENITHBANK, UNILEVER, GUINNESS – now carry Hold ratings from the houses that revised them. The message: buy for dividend, not for capital gain.
The Weaklings: Where Analysts Are Running Away
Three sectors received only downgrades: industrial goods, oil and gas, and agriculture. No upgrades at all.
Oil and Gas is the weakest link. PAC Research cut OANDO from Buy to Hold with negative 3.89% – a complete reversal from last week when it upgraded OANDO with 12.59% upside. That 16 percentage point swing in seven days is the most telling signal of analyst whiplash. Investment One cut SEPLAT from Accumulate to Sell with negative 19.63% – the most negative estimate in the whole market this week. With oil prices volatile and regulatory overhang, analysts are exiting.
Industrial Goods: Cement Cracks. PAC Research lowered BUACEMENT to Hold with negative 8.42%, ARM Research moved DANGCEM to Reduce with negative 2.50%. Two cement majors, both cut. This sector thrives on infrastructure spending and FX stability for energy costs. With fiscal pressure and Q4 bond supply of N5.75 trillion crowding out private credit, cement demand outlook is soft.
ETI, FIDELITYBK, INTENEGINS: The Reversal Stocks. Proshare flags three reversals to watch. PAC Research upgraded ETI last week, this week cut it to Hold with negative 3.28%. PAC upgraded OANDO last week, this week cut it. PAC upgraded INTENEGINS last week to Strong Buy with 33.33% upside, this week cut it to Hold with negative 5.88%. When the same research house reverses within seven days, it signals either price moved too fast or new information changed valuation. Either way, it erodes confidence.
Split Decisions: GUINNESS and INTBREW
Consumer goods is the most confused sector. Lead Capital lowered GUINNESS from Buy to Hold (1.81% upside) while Anchoria raised it from Sell to Hold (6.38% upside). Both end at Hold, but from opposite directions. Same for INTBREW – PAC negative, ARM very positive. This split means earnings visibility is poor. Cost pressure, FX for imported inputs, and weak consumer purchasing power make brewery earnings hard to forecast.
UNILEVER and NASCON also cut to Hold with 8.26% and 3.5% expected returns respectively – not Sell, but no longer Buy.
Prospect: Selective, Valuation-Driven, Event-Led
Three things will define the market into month-end.
First, whether the four high-upside calls – INTBREW 15.47%, MBENEFIT 12.67%, WEMABANK 11.67%, FIRSTHOLDCO 11.03% – translate into actual buying. In a Hold-dominated market, 11-15% is meaningful alpha, but only if Q3 earnings support it.
Second, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery public offer closes on 27 October. That offer has sucked liquidity from secondary market. Once it closes, some liquidity may return to equities.
Third, dividend actions on 30 October for ZENITHBANK, UNILEVER and GUINNESS will test the Hold thesis. All three are now Hold-rated. If prices do not rally into dividend date, it confirms analysts are right – the market wants cash dividend, not growth story.
Overall, the market position is clear: from broad optimism to cautious selectivity. Banking has pockets of value but also downgrades. Consumer goods has high upside but high disagreement. Industrial goods, oil and gas, and agriculture are outright weak.
In a week with 12 downgrades, 6 upgrades and Hold as the default, the message is simple: Don’t chase the market. Chase the few stocks where analysts still have conviction, and even there, manage risk.
