Nigerian Equities Turn Choosy – Banks Lead, Sugar and Insurance Bleed

Nigerian stocks are no longer moving as a crowd. The week of October 19 to 23, 2026 has exposed a market that is learning to be selective, ruthless and valuation-driven, where brokers are rewarding earnings strength and punishing balance sheet weakness. With five upgrades and five downgrades and one stock moved off the watchlist, the message from CMOs is clear: broad sector bets are dead, stock picking is back.

Banking is the clear mover and shaker. It produced the most upgrades and the strongest conviction calls. Anchoria Research turned aggressively optimistic on the Tier-1 giants, raising GTCO from Hold to Buy with a projected upside of 20.19% and ZENITHBANK from Hold to Buy with 19.05%. PAC Research joined the party, upgrading ETI from Hold to Buy with 11.34% expected return. Even STERLINGNG, which was Under Review last week, was placed on Hold by Lead Capital, signaling stability. The only dent in the banking rally was ACCESSCORP, which PAC Research cut from Buy to Hold, a sign that not all big banks will enjoy the same earnings momentum. The banking optimism reflects analysts’ belief that revaluation gains, improved capital adequacy post-recapitalization, and trading income will continue to support these names, but the ACCESSCORP downgrade is a warning that valuation has run ahead of fundamentals for some.

If banking is the shaker, insurance is the joker. The sector produced both the highest projected return in the entire market and one of the two negative returns. PAC Research upgraded INTENEGINS from Hold to Strong Buy with a massive 33.33% expected return, making it the stock to watch for aggressive traders willing to stomach illiquidity and underwriting risk. On the flip side, the same PAC Research downgraded MANSARD from Buy to Hold with a negative projected return of -4.55%, while Lead Capital cut LASACO from Buy to Hold with just 7.73% upside left. This divergence shows insurance remains a story of individual recapitalization and claims management, not a sector wave.

Oil and gas had only one mover but it mattered. PAC Research upgraded OANDO from Hold to Buy with 12.59% upside, the only revision in the sector, suggesting analysts see upside from asset restructuring and oil price resilience that is not priced into other oil names.

The weaklings this week are firmly in consumer goods, a sector being squeezed by FX costs, weak purchasing power and sugar import volatility. ARM Research turned less optimistic on GUINNESS, cutting it from Accumulate to Hold with a paltry 1.10% upside, effectively saying the brewer has no near-term juice. PAC Research did worse to DANGSUGAR, moving it from Buy to Hold with an expected negative return of -4.53%, putting it in the same doghouse as MANSARD at -4.55%. These two negative returns are the market’s red flags, a signal to trim exposure.

What did not move is also important. Industrial goods, agriculture and conglomerates were left unchanged, showing brokers are on the fence pending Q3 earnings and cement pricing clarity.

The prospect ahead is selective accumulation, not a bull run. The market will be driven by whether the big projected upsides on INTENEGINS at 33.33%, GTCO at 20.19%, ZENITHBANK at 19.05%, OANDO at 12.59% and ETI at 11.34% can convert into actual buying volume. For now, Hold ratings on STERLINGNG, ACCESSCORP, GUINNESS, LASACO, plus the negative signals on DANGSUGAR and MANSARD, should keep portfolio managers defensive. Investors who chase sector labels will get burnt, those who follow valuation, earnings outlook and liquidity will find the alpha.
