NGX Stock Picks: Where Analysts Are Placing Bets Before Dangote Refinery Listing

The analyst recommendations for the week of October 12, 2026 reveal a market that is not bullish, it is selective. With the Dangote Refinery IPO closing this week ahead of its listing, Capital Market Operators (CMOs) are not buying everything, they are upgrading where earnings quality meets upside and downgrading where valuation has run ahead of fundamentals. This is a rebalancing market, not a rally market.

The Market Champions: Banking and Insurance Lead

The clear champions of the week are banking and insurance. Banking recorded four outright upgrades, the broadest positive shift in months.

Stanbic IBTC is the most interesting tactical recovery. Upgraded from Hold to Accumulate by Afrinvest with 11.80% upside and from Sell to Hold by Anchoria with 5.00% upside, it shows that worst-case fears around the bank have eased. It is no longer a Sell, it is back on the watchlist.

Fidelity Bank and SterlingNG are the aggressive Buy champions. Anchoria upgraded both from Hold to Buy, projecting 19.05% and 15.58% upside respectively. This is significant because both are Tier-2 banks that have benefited from recapitalization optimism and improved risk asset creation. For investors seeking high beta banking exposure ahead of Q3 earnings, they are now the preferred picks.

AccessCorp, upgraded from Hold to Buy by PAC Research with 10.51% expected return, is the value rebound play. Trading around N29.50 to N31.10 with a P/E of 2.1x, it has been punished for dilution and expansion costs. The upgrade suggests analysts believe its low valuation now offers a margin of safety despite earnings quality concerns.

In insurance, Mansard is the outright star. Upgraded to Buy by two separate CMOs, PAC Research with 13.12% return and BlueMarina with 20.70% upside, it has double validation. NEM, upgraded to Accumulate by Afrinvest with 11.60% upside, confirms that recapitalized insurers with strong underwriting are attracting fresh money as investors rotate from expensive banks.

In consumer goods, DangSugar and Nestle, both upgraded to Buy with 20.71% and 12.73% upside, are the defensive champions. They show that analysts still trust staple food producers to defend margins despite inflation and FX pressure.

The Weaklings and Unsettled: Where Caution Is Rising

The weaklings are not crashing, they are being de-rated from Buy to Hold, meaning upside is capped.

PZ Cussons is the consumer weakling. Downgraded by Lead Capital from Buy to Hold with only 3.24% upside, it reflects pressure on discretionary consumer names that cannot pass on costs.

Okomu Oil, downgraded from Buy to Hold by Afrinvest with 5.78% upside, is the agric weakling, likely hurt by soft commodity prices and cost inflation.

In oil and gas, Oando and JapaulGold are the most unsettled. JapaulGold is both a Buy with 25% upside and a Hold with -7.42% expected return, depending on which CMO you follow. This split rating means earnings visibility is poor and it is a trader’s stock, not an investor’s stock. Oando, revised to Hold, falls in same category.

The two biggest Unsettled names are SterlingNG and Zenith Bank, both placed Under Review by Lead Capital and BlueMarina respectively after previous Hold ratings. When two of the most followed banks go Under Review in the same week as their peers are upgraded, it signals that CMOs are waiting for Q3 numbers to justify current prices. For Zenith, this is particularly telling, the market leader is not getting an automatic Buy anymore.

What It Means For Investment Decisions

This week’s pattern gives three clear strategic signals for investors.

First, rotate within banking, not out of banking. Sell expensive Tier-1 names on strength and buy upgraded Tier-2 names like Fidelity and Sterling, plus value Tier-1 like AccessCorp for 10% to 19% tactical upside.

Second, buy insurance for diversification. Mansard’s double Buy is the strongest consensus in the market this week. With 13% to 20% upside and lower correlation to banking volatility, it offers hedge ahead of Dangote listing.

Third, avoid mixed-signal stocks. Do not chase JapaulGold, Oando, PZ or OkomuOil until their Hold ratings clear. And hold Zenith and Sterling if you own them, but do not add until review is lifted post Q3 earnings.

The market is telling you the Dangote Refinery listing will force rebalancing. Smart money is moving to where upgrades are clean and upside is double-digit, banking and insurance, while parking weak and contested names on Hold.
