BERGER PAINTS 9M 2026: HOW N223 MILLION IN BANK INTEREST HID N1.3 BILLION IN RUNAWAY COSTS

The third quarter did not save Berger Paints. It exposed it.

For the nine months ended 30 September 2026, Berger Paints Nigeria Plc reported Group revenue of N10.008 billion, up 7% from N9.315 billion in 9M 2025. Profit after tax rose 12% to N1.087 billion from N968 million. On a Q3 standalone basis, the momentum looks even weaker: with H1 already strong, Q3 added little incremental profit but added a lot of cost.

The 9M numbers reveal the real story, and it starts with the first threat: a cost structure that has broken loose.

The 9M Weakness That Q3 Magnified

Gross profit for 9M is excellent: N5.219 billion vs N4.121 billion, up 27%. Gross margin expanded to 52.1% from 44.2% in 9M 2025 because cost of sales actually fell 7.8% to N4.789 billion despite revenue growth. That is pricing power and formulation efficiency.

Then Q3 happened. Administrative expenses for 9M ballooned to N3.462 billion from N2.157 billion – a 60.4% jump, or N1.304 billion in extra overhead. In Q3 alone, Berger spent more on admin than it made in gross profit for the quarter. Selling and distribution was cut 43% to N330 million for 9M, showing the sales team tightened belts, but head office did not.

Impact: Operating profit before impairment for 9M grew only 5% to N1.517 billion from N1.441 billion. So 27% gross profit growth translated to 5% operating growth. For every N1 of extra gross profit, 95 kobo was lost to admin. The operating margin for 9M collapsed to 15.1% from 20.8% gross margin expansion notwithstanding.

The second weakness Q3 left behind is cash quality. For 9M, profit before tax was N1.681 billion, up 15%, but net cash from operations fell 18.7% to N1.264 billion from N1.555 billion in 9M 2025. Tax paid in 9M was N1.060 billion vs N424.8 million last year – up 149.6% – because Q3 was when the 2025 tax liability of N793.4 million had to be settled. Current tax liabilities dropped to N326.7 million from N793.4 million in December, but at the cost of draining the till. Trade receivables for 9M rose 38.1% to N647.8 million vs December, while Group inventories stayed stubbornly high at N2.636 billion. Berger is profitable on paper but its 9M cash increase was just N27 million.

The third threat is valuation cliff risk created by Q3. As at 30 September 2026, market price closed at N147 vs N39 same period last year, up 278%. Market cap is N42.69 billion. With 9M EPS of 375 kobo, the trailing P/E is 39.2x. In 9M 2025 it was 11.6x. Net assets per share is N20, so P/B is 7.35x. The market is pricing Berger like a tech stock after a 9M period where operating profit grew 5%. If Q4 admin costs repeat Q3’s pattern, the full-year will miss expectations and that multiple will correct violently.

How 9M Strengths Were Used to Neutralize Q3 Threats

Berger neutralized these threats not on the factory floor, but on the balance sheet – and that is its strategic brilliance in 9M 2026.

Strength 1: Zero long-term debt fortress. In 9M, non-current loans went to zero from N121.1 million in Dec 2025. Total non-current liabilities fell to N729 million from N842.4 million. Total equity grew 14.5% to N5.718 billion from N4.993 billion. Retained earnings alone added N725.5 million in 9M. This equity funding meant that even with finance costs up 66.9% to N59.9 million, Berger had no refinancing risk in Q3. While other manufacturers defaulted on overdrafts, Berger used its balance sheet to absorb the N1.3 billion admin shock.

Strength 2: The treasury engine that saved 9M. This is the critical neutralization. Other financial assets grew in 9M to N2.654 billion from N1.981 billion in December – up 34%. That deployment generated finance income of N223.3 million in 9M vs N59.3 million in 9M 2025, up 276%. Net finance income for 9M was N163.3 million vs N23.4 million last year, up 598%.

Without that N139.9 million extra finance income, 9M PBT would have grown only 5.3% instead of 15%. The treasury income alone covered 10.7% of the N1.3 billion admin increase. In Q3, when operating profit stalled, interest from fixed deposits kept PAT growing at 12%.

How It Exploited 9M Opportunities to Secure Position

Opportunity 1: Customer-funded growth. Deferred income (current) for 9M jumped 784% to N236.3 million from N26.7 million in December. That is Q3 advance collections from dealers and project sites. Combined with prepayments down 38% to N108 million, Berger released N66.6 million cash from advances in 9M. While receivables rose, it offset by making customers pay upfront – a powerful working capital hedge in a high interest environment.

Opportunity 2: Liquidity as strategy. 9M cash and financial assets total N3.039 billion (N384.7m cash + N2.654bn financial assets) against current liabilities of N3.188 billion. That is 95% coverage without selling a tin. Add trade payables up 15.5% to N2.375 billion in 9M – Berger stretched suppliers while collecting upfront from customers. That negative cash conversion cycle is exactly what a paint company needs to fund expansion into construction chemicals without new debt.

The 9M Strategic Position: Financial Company Wearing a Paint Uniform

At the end of 9M 2026, Berger Paints is strategically positioned as a financial fortress with a paint operation inside.

Its 9M gross margin of 52.1% proves core product strength. Its 9M equity of N5.71 billion and zero long-term debt proves balance sheet strength. Its N163.3 million net finance income proves treasury strength. Those three strengths neutralized a 60.4% admin explosion and a 149% tax cash outflow that Q3 brought to a head.

But the Q3 impact is a warning: if admin costs for Q4 track 9M run-rate of N385 million per month, full-year admin will exceed N4.6 billion, wiping out the gross margin gain entirely. The opportunity is massive – cut 9M admin by just 20% (N692 million) and 9M operating profit jumps 45% to N2.2 billion.

Berger has bought time with interest income. It must now buy efficiency with cost control. The market has given it a N42.6 billion valuation for 9M. The operations must now earn it in Q4.
