Ogun Teacher Allegedly Kidnapped And Killed 16-Year-Old WASSCE Candidate, Spent Ransom Money On Sports Betting
A disturbing case from Ogun State has shocked Nigerians after a 30-year-old private school teacher, Nathaniel Baiyegun, was arrested over the alleged abduction and killing of a 16-year-old WASSCE candidate identified as Florence.
According to reports, the suspect allegedly lured the teenager under the guise of attending an academic coaching class before the situation turned deadly. Police sources revealed that Baiyegun later demanded ransom from the girlโs family and allegedly confessed to spending the money on online sports betting.
Investigators say the suspect, who reportedly taught Physics and Further Mathematics in a private school in Ogijo, reconnected with Florence about a year after she left his former school. In his statement, Baiyegun allegedly claimed they became close while she was still a student, although he denied any romantic involvement.
The suspect reportedly said he later introduced Florence to a friend identified as Sola, who had allegedly expressed interest in dating her. On April 8, Baiyegun allegedly invited the teenager to his new school premises while she was attending a nearby coaching center.
According to his account, he left Florence with Sola behind the school compound while he attended a class. When he returned later, Sola had reportedly left, and Florence allegedly told him the man demanded sex from her, but she refused because she was menstruating.
Police say the events later escalated into an alleged fake kidnapping plot designed to extort money from the victimโs family. Baiyegun reportedly admitted taking the teenager to an unfinished building behind the school and using her phone to negotiate a ransom demand of โฆ3 million from her father.
The suspect claimed Florence later complained she could not sleep because she was afraid of staying alone in the abandoned building. According to investigators, Baiyegun allegedly gave her four doses of D5 sleeping tablets.
He further stated that he traveled to attend a burial ceremony and returned on April 11, where he allegedly found the teenager gasping for breath. Instead of taking her to a hospital, Baiyegun reportedly transported her on a motorcycle and dumped her body in a river around the MTN area in Ogijo after pretending she was sick.
Investigators also alleged that preliminary findings linked the suspect to internet fraud activities. Reports further claimed he had previously requested explicit photographs from the deceased through her phone.
Despite allegedly knowing the teenager was dead, the suspect reportedly continued negotiating with her father and later received โฆ500,000 as ransom payment. Baiyegun allegedly confessed that most of the money was spent on online sports betting.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the arrest and praised the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for tracking down the suspect and recovering incriminating evidence connected to the case.
Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi urged residents to remain cautious about the company they keep and praised officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and dedication in tackling violent crimes.
The heartbreaking case has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians demanding justice for the teenager and calling for stricter protection measures for students and minors.
