The Federal Government has announced May 15th, 2023 as the date for the formal commissioning and opening of the Second Niger Bridge project.
The Honourable Minister for Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji-Fashola, SAN disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists during his tour of the Loko-Oweto bridge and link road that connects Benue and Nasarawa states.
According to him the legacy projects which gulped over N330bn is currently undergoing the necessary finishing touches and lane marking for commissioning.
“A lot of snag resolutions are going to start; lane marking on the bridge will soon start and erection of signage will also start soon. Just about two weeks before the end of the term, the President will be invited to the completion, and maybe any day thereafter, he will be able to fly in and do the ceremony. But by the 15th of May, the bridge should be fully open to traffic.”
President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR is expected to perform the ceremonial opening of the bridge, which should improve logistics and socio-economic activities in the country.
The Second Niger Bridge is a critical infrastructure that connects the South-West, South-East and South-South states.
It was designed to ease traffic from the First Niger Bridge that was constructed and completed in 1965.
For over 50 years there has been no alternative bridge/link road to the First Niger Bridge in the country.
The Works and Housing Minister also added that the Loko-Oweto bridge and link road was ready for commissioning, which will also boost logistics and commercial activities in North-Central Nigeria.
