THE United States Africa Command, AFRICOM, has announced the delivery of critical military supplies to Nigerian security partners in Abuja in a move aimed at strengthening ongoing counterterrorism and security operations across the country.
In a statement released on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, AFRICOM stated that the delivery underscores the shared security partnership between the United States and Nigeria and is intended to support Nigeria’s current military efforts.
The statement, shared via AFRICOM’s official social media account and tagged to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, emphasized continued bilateral cooperation in addressing regional security challenges.
It noted that Nigerian media outlets, including Legit.ng and Daily Post Nigeria, described the development as a significant boost to Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, banditry, and other security threats.
The announcement also gained traction online, where users and news-focused accounts linked the supplies to ongoing operations against extremist groups such as the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, particularly in conflict-prone areas like the Sambisa Forest.
According to the statement, the delivery comes amid strengthened U.S.-Nigeria security ties, following a series of coordinated actions in late 2025.
“Notably, U.S. forces conducted airstrikes on December 25, 2025, against ISIS-linked targets in Sokoto State, in coordination with Nigerian authorities, highlighting deepening operational collaboration.
“The United States has long provided security assistance to Nigeria, including the sale of A-29 Super Tucano aircraft and AH-1Z helicopters, as part of efforts to enhance Nigeria’s counterterrorism capacity, while promoting adherence to human rights and civilian protection standards.
“Analysts say the latest delivery reflects sustained bilateral engagement at a time when Nigeria continues to confront complex security threats, reinforcing the strategic partnership between both countries in a challenging regional security environment,” the statement added.
