Family of Late SDP Gubernatorial Candidate Cries Foul Over Mysterious Death, Police Investigation

The family of Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, a prominent Nigerian businessman and 2023 gubernatorial candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State, is calling for transparency and justice following his suspicious death on September 3, 2025.

In a press statement, Samuel Akingboye, the late politician’s first son, alleged that his father’s death was met with a series of disturbing events, including the removal of valuables from his residence and company account, inconsistent accounts of his death, and alleged intimidation and threats from his stepmother and her children.

According to the statement, Akingboye’s family proposed an autopsy, which was accepted, and a formal police report was filed. However, the investigation has been marred by alleged interference, with the case being transferred from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Surulere, despite the availability of CCTV footage and forensic evidence.

The family is questioning the actions of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Jimoh Moshood, who they claim has a history of covering up high-profile crimes. They are calling for the immediate release of the autopsy report, CCTV evidence, and an explanation for the repeated reassignment of case units.

The family has also appealed to the Inspector General of Police, the Governor of Ondo State, and human rights organizations to intervene and ensure justice is served.
