Court Jails Freight Agency Manager Over Unlawful Importation Of Hard Drugs

A Federal High Court, Lagos, has convicted and sentenced one Komolafe Gbenga John, a manager with a Netherland-based freight agency company, for trafficking in prohibited hard drugs.

Komolafe was convicted and sentences to 12 months imprisonment by Justice Friday Ogazi, after he pleaded guilty to two counts charge made against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

At the arraignment of the convicted freight agency manager, the prosecutor, Barrister Adekunle Adebajo, informed the court the that convict was arrested on November 7, 2025, at Custom Enforcement unit, Tincan Island port, Apapa, Lagos State.

The prosecutor informed the court that the convict arrested with 105.5 Kilogrames of Molly and 500 grams of Methamphetamine both psychotropic substances similar to cocaine heroin and LSD.

The convict during his arraignment confessed to court that he had been engaging in the illicit act for sometimes.

He particularly informed the court that his boss who is a citizen of Netherlands usually sent such ‘cargo’ to him for onward delivery to the owners.

Based on his guilty plea, his confession, the prosecutor after reviewing the facts of the charges and tendering of exhibits, prayed the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.

But lawyer to the convict, Barrister Uche Okoronkwo, in his allocutor prayed the court to temper Justice with mercy in sentencing his client.

Barrister Uche, while citing plethoras of authorities for Court to consider a non-custodian sentence for his client, described the convicted freight agency manager as a victim of circumstances, also informed the court that his ….

He therefore prayer the court to give his client a non-custodian sentence in lieu of the imprisonment l.

In his judgment, Justice Ogazi after listening to the submissions made by both the prosecutor and the convict’s lawyer, sentenced the freight agency manager, Gbenga Komolafe John, to 12 months imprisonment.

The judge also ordered the convict to pay the sum N1 million in addition to the jail-term.

Justice Ogazi further ordered that should the convict elect not to pay the sum of N1 million, he should in the Correctional Services facility for another four months.

Charges against the convict read: “that you Komolafe Gbenga John, Adult, Male on or about the 7th day of November, 2025 at Custom Enforcement unit at Tin can Island port in Apapa area of Lagos state within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court without lawful authority imported 105.5 kilogrammes of Molly a psychotropic substance similar to cocaine and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 11(a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

“That Komolafe Gbenga John, Male, Adult on or about the 7th day of November, 2025, at Customs Enforcement Unit, in Apapa area of Lagos state within the jurisdiction of this Honourable court without lawful authority, imported 500 grams of Methamphetamine, a psychotropic substance similar to Cocaine heroin LSD, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 11(a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30 Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004.”
