Country of Particular Concern: President Tinubu Assures That Nigeria Guarantees Religious Liberty

Following the classification of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern by President Donald Trump of the United States of America over the reports of the killings of Christians across the country, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in a statement, has assured that Nigeria remains a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty.

According to his statement, “Since 2023, our administration has maintained an open and active engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders alike and continues to address security which affect citizens across faiths and regions.”

President Tinubu said the characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect the reality and does not take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians.

“Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet and collective identity and shall always remain so. Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.”

The President assured that his administration is ready to work with the government of the United States of America and the international community to deepen understanding and cooperation on the protection of communities of all faiths.

President Donald Trump issued a statement earlier, designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over the killing of Christians, warning that if the Nigerian government does not take significant steps to curb the killings, it will lead to a cutting of all aid and support, with a possible military operation to strike the terrorists carrying out the reported attacks.
